Recipe: Soft Pretzels

  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (+ 3/4 cup if needed)
  • 3 cups water (1 cup warm)
  • 7 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 4 tbs baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt & extra for topping

  1. Preheat oven to 475°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone baking sheet.
  2. Mix yeast, warm water, and sugar in the bowl.
  3. Once the mixture is frothy stir in salt and 1 tbs of melted butter.
  4. Add flour until a dough is no longer sticky.
  5. Knead the dough for 5 minutes until smooth. Roll the dough into a ball, place it into your bowl and allow it to rest for 15 minutes.
  6. Boil 2 cups of water and add 4 tbs of baking soda. Take the water off the heat once the baking soda is mostly dissolved. Let it cool down to a lukewarm temperature.
  7. Pour into a 9×9 baking dish
  8. Flatten your dough and cut it into 8 sections (like a pizza). Roll each section into a long rope about 20” long.
  9. Create the pretzel shape and place in the baking soda water for 2 minutes. Pick up the pretzel with a fork through one of the loops and put it on your baking sheet.
  10. Bake for 8-9 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. While the pretzels are still hot, brush on melted butter and add salt (optional)
