Movie Review: The Stepfather (2009)

When troubled teen Michael returns home after a year at military school, he finds his mother, Susan, in love and his soon-to-be stepfather, David, has moved into their home. David says he wants them to become the perfect family. But as they get to know each other, Michael quickly becomes convinced that David himself is far from perfect. Trying to verify what he knows of David’s past, Michael finds things that don’t add up. As strange events and David’s bursts of malevolence become more frequent, Michael tells his mother and girlfriend of his suspicions, but they just think he’s being paranoid. Eventually, as Michael searches for proof that his suspicions are well-founded, cracks begin to show in David’s perfect facade and it becomes apparent he will stop at nothing to keep his secrets. For David has a history of trying to create the perfect family. And each time, when it becomes apparent that perfection is impossible, David has a terrifying way of clearing the slate and starting over. Released October 16th, 2009

Starring: Dylan Walsh, Sela Ward, Penn Badgley, Amber Heard, Sherry Stringfield

This movie was a pretty good PG-13 scary movie. I don’t know if I’d call it a horror flick but it was suspenseful and there were a couple scary scenes. As a parent the thought that someone like this could come into your life scared me a little. If any kid saw this movie they probably would have nightmares if they had a stepdad….so do not let them see it…LOL. There was a good story line in this movie, there was all this suspicion about who this guy was and then there was evidence that made them even more suspicious. It was getting really good, it felt like we were just about to hit the peak in the movie and BAM!…they found out that he really is the killer. He then he chased them for 3-5 minutes and it was over. I was all excited thinking, oh here it comes he’s gonna get em, someone’s gonna die and then it was over so fast and I felt a little disappointed and asking “is it over, is that it?”. They could have and should have added more chasing or him htrying to kill them. They probably would have to bumped up the rating to add stuff like that but I don’t think it would have hurt the movie, I think it wold have made it better. Overall it’s most likely not going to win any awards but I still think it was pretty good and I would recommend it to others.
